  • '96 SPX oil consumption...

I'm new to PWC's, bought a used 96 Seadoo SPX 717 in april.
It only used 2 quarts of oil since april this year, about
30-40 gallons of gas. I have checked the oil filter for flow,
the check valve on top of the oil tank. I will check the oil pump next. The ski runs great, but I don't want a blow engine! Any help is appreciated, thanks.

    So, what is the problem?

These things do not use alot of oil quickly, unless of course, you are riding lots of hours. How many actual hours would you guess that you have run the motor? 30-40 gals is what ? 5 tanks of fuel ? I'd guess you should have used about 2 quarts by now, as you stated.

I don't know how many hours, I think it would be about 10-12 hours run time. The manual says to pull the pump lever full at idle and see if it smokes a lot. Thanks for the help.:)

Sounds fine to me, otherwise 10 hours, it would have siezed by now.

There are alignment marks to align on the cable lever on the oil pump.

I was thinking of adding oil to the gas at about 100:1 and leave the injection pump in place.
I will test the pump lever at idle, does this sound ok or should I just leave it alone? Thanks for the good advice! :)

            Re: '96 SPX oil consumption...

There's absolutely no point in doing so. If the pump is ok you are wasting oil. If the pump is bad, 100:1 doesn't do any good. One or the other, good pump or pre-mix - pick one.

I doubt you need to do anything but enjoy your pwc.

I checked the pump lever alignment, it was SLIGHTLY under the pump line. I adjusted the cable to line it up correctly. It seems fine now, I can see/smell oil smoke now. It ran great this weekend. Thsnks for the help.:)
