When i start my 96xp out of the water on the trailer it sounds like my impleller or something down there makes a horrible rattleing noise after its been on for about 4 seconds. I have owned many other xp's before this one and have never heard that loud annoying sound. Ski runs fine though

the death rattle is normal , but you might want to pull the pump and check for driveshaft bumpers , also check the pump for oil and grease the splines to be on the safe side .

Isn't it horrible for the impeller to run it out of the water. i would think it would cause premature wear on the wear ring?

Being that you have clearance between the impellor and the wear ring, NO, it doesn't hurt anything to run the pump out of the water.

Just don't do it for very long as, I think, those pump bearings depend on being submersed for cooling.

are you sure, i have a had a couple other skis before this on and no others had that horrible sound. is there someway i can get rid of it

Remove your driveshaft cover and pour a cup of water onto the carbon seal. It will stop the noise for a few minutes ( if that is really the noise you are hearing). Yes, it is normal, no it will not hurt anything. The noise goes away when you put it into a lake.

Ok, i'll take your word on it. I am almost 100% sure that sound is coming from somewhere around the impeller though. What is the carbon seal? Is it underneath the flywheel cover?

THE NOISE IS AWFUL IN MY GSXL BUT IN THE XP99L IS NOT SO CLUNKY, anyhow those pumps are just fine both, so i would say dont worry about it
