  • 1992 Seadoo SP, dies after 15-30 seconds

    Hello,

I have a 1992 Seadoo SP, Every once in a while, the ski will die every 15-30 seconds, but it will start back up immediately run for another 15-30 seconds, and then do the same thing again. It doesn't matter if you are full throttle, or idling. Sometimes it will do this for only about a half hour to an hour, and then it is fine, and other times it won't do it at all. I am at a loss on what this could be, since sometimes it's fine, when I do absolutly nothing different. Any ideas?

I actually need to replace the solenoid as well from the continual starts this year, is this available seperately, or do I have to replace the whole starter.

    Thanks

The first thing to look at is the rubber gromment that seals the gas tank vent to the hood. If misaligned, it will block the venting of the fuel tank.

Also, make sure the internal filter under the fuel pump is clean inside the carb, and the fuel selector switch is clean in both positions, on and reserve.

      Thanks Bill,

I will check that out, any opinion on the starter, can the solenoid just be replaced, I never worked on a Rotax motor, and I'm not going to take it apart until spring. Just trying to figure what I need to purchase so I can be ready early this season.

      Thanks

The solenoid is in the grey box. It is not part of the starter motor. Jump the two big connectors on the solenoid to see if the starter motor is good ( yes if it works), If yes, replace the solenoid. If not, replace the starter motor.

somthing to check since your having shutoff problems is the starter , if its loose or missing a bolt you can have all the problems you describe .

As for the starter, it should be fine, it still cranks the motor but then disengages after a few cranks, and you just here the starter spinning freely. That has to be the solenoid right?

Wrong. If the starter spins, the solenoid works.

any opinions on what would cause the starter to disengage the motor after a few cranks?

                Thanks

Yeah, they get worn out. The flywheel gets chewed up, the starter clucth spring gets weak and or rusty, the starter motor gets worn out and bingo, things don't work properly anymore.
