  • 98 GTX RFI..... Question

    Hey Guys

Thanks for all of the awesome information provided in this forum!

    Here's my little problem:
    1998 GTX RFI

The ski has a slight 'hesitation' or 'bogg' at around 4000 to 4500 rpms. It runs fantastic below or above this Rpm.

I have heard several possible causes....dirty injectors.....rave valve adjustments

    Any ideas where to start??

    Thanks Much,

    Mark in SW FLa

sounds almost like the raves opening , sure its a bogg ? not just a surge of power ?

      Re: 98 GTX RFI..... Question

its definately not a surge in power.

almost like a miss or something. Also similar to a carbed ski, where the carbs need a cleaning.

      Thanks again for any help

        Re: 98 GTX RFI..... Question

The TPS adjustment can cause missing, fouled plugs, & poor performance. It sets the relationship between fuel mapping and rpm range.

          Re: 98 GTX RFI..... Question

RFI should not have a TPS ,

have you tryed the simple things like cleaning the raves and changing the spark plugs ?

check your voltage with a guage make sure the rectifier is working .

            Re: 98 GTX RFI..... Question

RFI's do have a TPS and it's a very common problem to have a customer change the idle adjustment, then need to have it recalibrated by the dealer.

                  Re: 98 GTX RFI..... Question

The TPS is a wire wound resistor and can get bad spots in it. Also wear etc will change the relationship between the TPS and throttle plate opening. You can do a resistance test to see if it jumps etc, but I've never found a bad one with that test.
I just replaced one on a snowmobile that would have a different degree of opening at idle once in a while. The resistance test was good though. A new one stopped it.
BTW it was only 1 year old.

                    Re: 98 GTX RFI..... Question

Any ballpark idea of cost to have a dealer look at or test the TPS?

As I understand it, only dealers have access to the coumputer software neccessary to run a check on these 98 rfi's.

                    Thanks,

                      98 GTX RFI

What should be the top RPM/Speed @ WOT for this ski?

I realize speed has a few subjective factors but RPM's should be easy to figure?
My RPM's max out around 6750 and speed shows 47 to 50 mph

I have only been through about 3 tanks of gas on new SBT engine and the repair shop just cant seem to find out what's causing the stutter at around 4,000 rpms. Last time in they screwed the 2 rave valves all the way down, In my opinion just to say they did something.....guess what...did'nt fix it.
They say the only solution is to go to the dealer to hook it up to the computer to see whats happening with the RFI.

                      Any suggestions first????
