Just purchased 01 and 02 GTI.Both ran great but one filled up with water. I noticed it was not pumping water out through the little hole up front like the other one is. What is the problem? How does this "pump" work? Thanks

Re: SeaDoo GTI
I'm not sure what you mean by "the little hole upfront". Most SeaDoos don't have any water exit the hull towards the front of the ski. All of mine have two very small outlets at the ski tow eye in the center of the back of the ski under the grab handle. These are telltales (also know as "pissers")that indicate that cooling water is circulating thru the engine. In the very bottom of the hull, on either side of the driveshaft, there are two pickup's that connect to the low preasure side of the jet pump that act as bilge pumps. They are intended to remove water from the inside of the ski, and they do "ok" but not great. They work better the faster you go but, in any case, you will not see them work. If you have a thru hull fitting (hole) towards the front that is about 3/4" then someone may have added a seperate bilge pump. Seperate bilge pumps can be set up to work automatically when water gets in the hull or with a manual switch that you can activate when you need to.
If you are getting water inside the hull in large quantities then it is probably from one (or both) of a couple sources. It could be coming in around the driveshaft. There is a "carbon seal" there that can fail and allow water in. Or, you could have a cooling water line loose or with a hole in it. It could also be a loose exhaust hose somewhere but you did not say anything about excess noise of problems running.
The easiest way to check is to strap the ski to the trailer and back it into the lake like you were going to launch but leave the ski attached to the trailer. Start the engine and watch to see if you can find where the water is coming in.
Check out your ski a little further and post back with more info. Maybe we can help.

Re: SeaDoo GTI
If that's the case then that's the first thing that needs to be checked. If it's clogged then the ski will overheat, if it's off then the ski will fill with water whenever the ski is running.
The telltales really don't come out the back anymore? My newest ski is a '00 and they doo, so what do I know?

Re: SeaDoo GTI
on my XP those get clogged sometimes, but it always frees up when I put it on the flush kit. I always thought though that that "Pisser" Is a bypass and doesnt always mean the engine isnt being cooled if its clogged. Re: SeaDoo GTI
pissers on my boats do the same thing, especially my duck boat. i run it in very shallow water in the dunes they plug up with sand. on a more serious note do what Dave suggested . friend of my son took his js 550 out the other weekend on the river without another boat for safety. blew an exhaust hose flooded engine compartment, hypothermia locked him up just as he got close enough to shore for someone to grab him . bought a used gti with the carbon seal. some body dident put it back together properly i guess. seal pushed forward. crap these things can sink fast. when that happens. good luck finding your leak. broke a rear tow grommet on my slt once.leaked lots of water in. found it by doing what dave said to do. left it straped to the trailer backed it way into the water .

Re: SeaDoo GTI
if the ski filled with water ,check the motor mounts { pull on the engine and see if it moves } if it does then you mounts are broke and you will need to change them . also check your carbon ring for damage . its under the plastic cover behind the engine on the drive shaft .
keep in mind to always take the first few min of the first ride of the day to check under the seat as the engine warms up and check for leaks :-)PRIDE IN SERVICE

Re: SeaDoo GTI
The pisser on any jetski is there so you can visually check to see that the impellor pump is pumping water through the motor AND to bleed any trapped air out of the highest point on the engine or exhaust so that the water system will not become steam locked and not allow water to circulate through the complete system.
There are no other water pumps on personal watercraft, other than maybe an electric bilge pump.
The 1995-1996 Sea Doo's used an oring in the groove on the driveshaft to retain the carbon seal behind the pto. THIS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH THE SUPERCEDED STEEL RETAINER CIRCLIP at the first opportunity, as the orings ALWAYS fail and allow the hull to flood with water. This is a $3.00 part and is easy to replace by pulling back on the stainless steel collar of the carbon seal, cutting off the oring and snaping the new circlip into the groove in the driveshaft.
If no water is coming from the visual inspection outlet (ie: pisser), first check the pisser hose for blockage. Bugs like to nest in the outlet and sand can block the hose or the outlet. If no blockage is found in the hose or outlet, disconnect the pisser hose and see if water comes from the head fitting. If not, remove the main waterline from the pump to the engine and see if the pump is pushing water to the engine. If not, then the pump is probably clogged up with debris and you will need to remove the jet pump and find the cause and fix it.Bill O'Neal
