  • Opinions on these plugs please

My brother ran these plugs yesterday and I was wondering if you guys with plug experience could tell me thoughts on lean or okay.

Can't really tell anything from that picture.

What exact procedures did you use to get the plug readings?

      TS,

None- my brother took out the ski yesterday and ran the ski recreationally for about 2 hours. These plugs were brand new and I pulled them just to make sure of some things after the carb rebuild and having to readjust the throttle cable and the oil pump line. Here is another pic. And yes I know to get exact ill have to run proper plug chops but I wanted an opinion on this as of now

From what I can see it looks good.

No wa to tell that without doing a chop. Coming back to idle to pull them will gunk them up in no time flat. The rim though looks good as far as mixture - best guess from the picture at least.

Cant tell anything useful from the pics.

If you want a reading worth much, a plug chop needs to be done. Read the base of the insulator for the height of the carbon deposit. Color of the center electrode will give info on proper plug heat range.

Thanks guys my concern is on the plug which you cant tell from the pic the base of the plug doesnt have any oil on it. In this oicture the part that is circled in white has no oil deposits on it it is pretty clean so I was thinking that it was lean. the porcelin part is nice and caramel. I know you cant really see it in the pic but beleive me on the base of the screw in part that I circled there are no oil deposits and it is clean just dark electrode and porcelin. How do you tell a lean plug from a good plug I guess would be a better question.

By the carbon ring deposit at the base of the insulator. (look at my avatar) A plug that is too lean, the carbon ring will be either very thin or non existant. I like to run about 1.5 to 2 mm up from the base and that will be very safe. That is run with NEW plugs intalled on an allready warmed up engine to do the plug chop, I then swap plugs and read back on shore by removing the shell like my avitar shows. I can read jetting with about 10 to 12 seconds full throttle on new plugs.

Ill add a warning that if the compression has been raised and specifically raised beyond the capabilities of the fuel being used, a correctly jetted ski will die from detonation. There are shops out there that depend on being overjettd to run the compression they are running, but that is backwards tuning if you ask me.

Thanks Chris Ill be running some chops tomorrow and this is a single carb 1995 GTS fully stock so I dont need to worry about that other stuff and will be looking to dial in my low speed and be done with this. One questions as I am still new at most of this fine tuning stuff. To richen I need to move out my low speed correct? I am at 1 1/4- 1 1/2 out now. Zero on the high speed.

Everyone is different, but I dont like to do plug reading except for the high speed circuit. For the low speed, I depend on the butt dyno ride and feel method. :D
