  • How to take out a drive shaft

I have a 1990 sea doo si 5803 and I need to take out the drive shaft in order to get to the wear ring. The wear ring was damaged because a rock broke a small hole in it. Do I have to replace the wear ring if there is a small hole in it? How do I take out the drive shaft?

You need to remove the pump. The wear ring is in the pump. Once you have the pump removed from the hull, you can remove the impellor, then the wear ring. The driveshaft can stay in the hull, or if it does come out with the pump, just pull it out of the impellor.

I took off all the bolts that attach the pump to the hull and it still wont come off. What do I do? Do I still need to pull something else off so the pump will come out?

Make sure that you have disconnected any bailer tubes inside the ski that go through the rear hull into the pump. Make sure that the carrier seal is loosened up (rubber boot around driveshaft). Then... PULLLLLLLLLL! Those things get stuck on there pretty tight. I have taken a soft rubber mallet before and tapped for a while till it started to loosen up

More than often, you will need a pump puller to get one of those older model pumps out because they used a generious amount of silicone to seal it to the pump support plate, not to mention the corrosion on the studs that it sits on.

you can easily make a pump puller with a two by four with two holes in it to match the top two bolt holes where the venturi nozzel attaches to the pump. Use long 8mm bolts or all thread to go through the 2x4 and into the bolt holes. When you tighten it down, it will pull the pump out of the pump support plate.

Prying and banging on it usually will not work, but can do damage to the pump.

Do you mean tap on the impellar housing because that is what I am having trouble getting off. Also do I need to do all of this if the wear ring has one small hole on the top of it?

Yes you need to do it.

Reread my instructions about not tapping or prying on it. Those old models have a very thin aluminum housing that you can damage easily.

Bills right and I should not have given you that tap methood. I use the tap methood, but am VERY careful how hard I tap. Like I said, it took me a while.

Did you unscew it from the impellor shaft? Remove the cone on the rear of the pump and place the flat part of the impellor shaft in a vise. Using the impellor installatoin/removal splined tool and a breaker bar, unscrew the impellor from the shaft and remove it from the pump.
