  • help....

just order an engine from sbt and I'm trying to get the old one out. It's a 1996 gti and I'm having a problem getting the pump off. It's loose and Ican almost pull it off 3 of the 4 bolt It just dosent want to come off. Am I missing something? Am I suppose to do something with the drive shaft? I checked there is no clip like it said in the video, does the pump come off and then you pull out the shaft or is it all one piece?.. I been spending over 2 hrs ans I/m getting nowhere. Can it be possible that theres that much silicone and i just need to keep yanking. any suggestions? Ill be moving on to the next step to take my mind off it until i here something.....

Take a break and do a little reading. We have been talking about this the past day or so in other threads, or you could use the technical forums or search feature here.

      Bill:

Lines are disconnected, so I guess I just have to keep on pulling. I am correct by saying pull the driveshaft out after the pump is removed? It doesn't come out all together, right. In one of your earlier threads you talked abot makinhg a pump puller from a 2 by 4. Can you tell me how?

      Thanks!!!

        Re: help....

A 1996 GTI has a rubber oring on the driveshaft under the collar that is known as the carbon seal. Sometimes you will find a circlip, as the orings did not work so well and they later upgraded to the circlip. Slide the collar rearwad to see it, before you remove the pump ( to keep the driveshaft from moving back when you slide the collar back). Once that is out of there, the pump and driveshaft will both come out the back of the boat. Usually on later models, like the 1996, the pump will pull out easily, without a puller. Just a little pry bar action.

2X4 with two holes in it makes a puller.

Vinnie did you make sure that you removed the bailer lines so they are not holding up the pump from coming out.

              Re: help....

Looked at the driveshaft diagram. I have everything except the 2 o rings. I guess the mechanic left them out. But,the driveshaft is not connected to the pump, right? so the pump should come off shouldn't it?. When I reinstall I'll put the o rings on.

                Re: help....

I mispoke bailer lines but yes the two lines going to the pump they have to be off to pull the pump if the orings are not there not sure what else is left to get it out should just out from there.

                    Re: help....

has the driveshaft come loose from the pump if so you should be able to pull the motor and pull the driveshaft through the inside of the hull I think. Have you pulled the driveshaft out of the PTO?

                      Re: help....

Vinnie, There are two types of driveshaft seals. One has a grease fitting on it, and the other is a carbon seal.

If it has a grease fitting, the driveshaft will come out without removing any clip or oring. If it does not have a grease fitting, there is a clip or an oring that must be removed to get the driveshaft out.

If it is just stuck in there, you will need to attach a chain and yank it out.

                        Bill:

So the o rings would have to be under the collar? tried to pull back collar but it appears to be in a fixed position. I put some wd40 and will see if I can move it.

you might need to tap it to get the ring to move if its never been out . but it till move then you will see the Oring or if it has been to a dealer since new it should have the steel clip .

I finally got it... Yes there was a c-clip under the collar, the collar was stuck and wouldn't move. Thanks guys, now onward, I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along.

                            Thanks for your help.
