  • stator question, please help

with the stator wires unpluged the 5 amp fuse does not blow, but there is no gauage or light on the gauge working when the stator is unplugged. As soon as I try to plug the (4) wire stator plug in, the fuse blows right away. I tested the resistance and it is .05 on the yellow wires and 58 on the black wires, so it seems to be within spec's. Starter switch ok, lanyard ok, ground wire from battery to frame seems to be in excellent condition. Any suggestions?

Brandon with what you said in your email I would make sure that the box is completely aired out and dry before starting to put more fuses in it.

The stator on the front of the engine is shorted out and needs to be replaced, or the magneto cover is full of water, or both.

I pulled the cover off and there was no water inside. A resistance test is showing that the charging coil & the generating cil are good. Both test were right on with the sea doo spec's in the manual. Could it be the mpem, is thier any way to test for sure? Also, if I use my meter with one probe on the negative side of the battery and the other side to the engine or the black wire from the coil to the engine ground I geat a reading of .2 on my digital meter. Why would the ground be showing anything? Shouldn't it read o.o. Thanks.

I tested the stator according to the manual and the readings were correct. I read on a forum eairler that you can test each wire individualy by putting one probe to wire and other to a ground and that you shouldnt get a reading. I did that and I am getting a reading of .6 on the black wire going into the stator and I am getting a 60. reading on the black/red wire going to the stator. Does this mean the stator is shorting out inside. Also, can I plug a new stator in without it being attached to the flywheel to test or does it have to be fully installed. Thank you Mr. O"Neal for you help.

If the stator checks out to be OK, then maybe you do have a faulty MPEM. The only way you will know is by swapping it with another that works. You can test it with an ohm meter all day, but like it states in the manual, it still could be bad.

Without an ignition tester like SD sells, the next best way is to swap out the electrical components one at a time until you find the faulty part.

If I test each stator wire to ground, shouldnt all the readings be 0.

No, the black with red or black with red / blue wire ( depending on which stator you are testing) should read 40 to 76 ohms. This is the generating coil wire. It provides the energy to the coil for ignition spark.

                  Re: stator question, please help

when it come to working on power packs stators MPEMs going by the book can cost a ton of money and get you no where . i work on both boats and skis and many test that say the part is good ends up being bad ,after a few yrs in the feild you just know what the problems are i feel sorry for the guys who dont electrical is a hard thing to fix .

make sure your flywheel is not rusted and touching the stator . if the MPEM is bad make sure you know what shorted it before pluging in a new one .

                    Thanks fastski,

It wasnt the stator, replaced it last night and the fuse still blows. How can I test the mpem to make sure its bad. I'm thinking it is bad because of the rear eletricl box being full of water and I dont know how many times it had been driven with the water inside. Is there any waty to test the mpem on this model. Thanks

Not really, there are some ohm tests that can be made ( you need a manual, cause I don't have all day to list them) but even then, the manual says if it all checks out good, it still could be bad, install and good mpem and see if it fixes it.
