  • Break-in fouled plugs

I'm into the 3rd part of the break in procedure (up to 90% up/down rpm's) on my 99 gsxRFI Sea Doo. On part 2, my new SBT short block suddenly lost power and seemed to be moving at 1/2 speed (like one cylinder). I pulled the plugs and they were oily and fouled. I'm running break-in oil plus injection oil. Before I panic, is it normal when using this much oil at the beginning of the break in to have the plugs totally fouled and cut to 1/2 speed. At the end of the 35 minute run, it wouldn't start up in the water. I'm guessing that when I put in the 2nd tank of fuel, these problems will go away, right? I'll be sure to take the oars with me tomorrow...just in case.

    Re: Break-in fouled plugs

It's not normal, as in expected everytime - but it certainly happens, especially with RFI's which are more sensative to plug condition than any other. Try fresh plugs, and be sure not to run any more pre-mix. In fact top off the tank with straight gas now. Even though the RFI injectors are rather beefy for what they are (regular automotive injectors) they still don't really like much oil going through them, they can't meter it properly.

Tech Support: I thought I would let you know that you were right on the mark! I topped off the tank (2 gallons) and avoided idleing too long in the no wake area (oops!). I ran it up and down the rpm's up to 90% and the Sea Doo ran just great. No stalls or bogging down. I pulled the plugs and they were dark but still in working order. Changed plugs for the weekend and ready to continue breaking it in.

Question: Do you recommend dumping a little oil into the gas tank even with oil injection? Could it prevent a major meltdown like I had last summer? Just wondering.

No, there is no need and it wouldn't prevent anything.

i tell all of my customers to run 100/1 mix in there fuel along with there inj oil . many have said they have seen a drop in maintaince bills . could be iam just that good that my customers skis dont break as much as they use to :-) or the little added oil really does help . i do know on my own skis that i ride and ride hard and have never lost a crank .

                Re: Break-in fouled plugs

When my BOAT engine blew (oil injected), they recommended 60:1 mixture in the fuel along with oil injection. I will try the 100:1 in the Sea Doo. The worst it can do is probably foul the plugs a little but it guarantees that there will ALWAYS be oil in the system. Plugs are a lot cheaper than a new short block. I'll let you know the results after the break-in process is complete.

I was told with the gsx rfi. There is no need to add premix oil. In fact you should not. I fouled my first set of plugs early but now my RFI runs like it should.
