So If the spark is fine, then that means the ignition pickup is probably good too. So that leaves the magneto cup on the flywheel or the bolts that hold it on, or a foriegn object floating around in there shorting things out.

If the magneto was missagested why was i riding for 2 hrs before it broke. I had no problems threw break in. it was running get before it died. I just tightened all the cup bolts and the flywheel nut and still no luck. Nothing is loose or broke when i tigthened everything. Any other tricks i should look or try?

the 97.5/98 single coil 951 have a different magneto and flywheel then the 99 up dual coil, the flywheel's from 98 can be used but the timing hole and keyway are different from the 99 up flywheels, 98 magnetos have two pickups on the outside of the magneto and 99 up dual have 4 on the magneto
i think you have a timing issue..
your flywheel mag could have shifted a hair and it will still seem tight.. if it sheared the key it is lodged in there and makes it seem tight..
if i were you i would pull the flywheel-mag and make sure.. its not that hard and will take at most 1 hr
just remove the pipe and front motor mount and support the engine with a 2x4 and with a rope and sling pull the motor up a hair in the front.... easy cheesy

          Seadoohx,
The woorruff keyway and timing hole is in the exact same place on all 951 flywheels.

The only difference is the magneto. A 1998 magneto has two timing protrusions, a 1999 + flywheel has four.

          Novaslow,
Are you saying you just opened your mag cover and retightened all of those bolts since we have been talking to each other ? If so, did you remove the flywheel from the engine to check the woodruff key? Did you remove the magneto from the flywheel to see if the bolts had allowed the holes to get wallowed out? Did you inspect the whole area for a broken starter gear tooth that may be interfering with the ignition pickup?
Please give me more information on what you have or have not done.

Yes I have been doing this while talking to you. I have tightened the mag cup and all bolts around that area. I put it back together and still had the same problem. The starting gear and flywheel are in perfect shape, there is no grinding when the starter ingauges. Can those mag holes be just a little off. They where not loose when I tightened them. It back apart and Im going to pull the flywheel off to see if the woodruf key has slip. The problem happen when i was riding not starting it. So if it was the woodruf key would it not run right after starting not riding. Is there a good way to keep the motor from spining when trying to remove the nut that holds the flywheel on.

I found the problem the woodruf key has sheared.

Thanks to all that has help I cant thank you enough for all that you have help:)

remove one spark plug and put a 1/4 in rope in the hole { make sure you dont get it in the exhust port } that will keep the engine from turning .
