  • It begins!!

When I get home this evening, I am planning to start putting the engine back together again. I want to do this right so I have a few questions:

    1. When I took the engine apart, I noticed that there was a clear silcone applied to the starter as well as to the flywheel cover. Is this necessary or was it just extra protection? Is there any other places that this should be used on the engine?

    2. I know that loctite ghoes around the the threads of the bolst. How do you apply it to nuts?

    3. Where do I put the loctite for the flywheel?

    4. I notice that loctite comes in several strengths. the blue is light wweight and used for most of the rebuild. What do I use for the flywheel, is it the red?

    5. What is the green stuff used for ?

Like I said, just want to do it right as well as a good learning expierence for me.

    thanks

Blue is the only loctite used, it goes on the threads of the nut, same as the bolts, silicone is NEVER used on any part of an engine.

A good gasket maker sealant is not a bad idea on the starter motor gasket and on the front cover.
I know it is not specified, but water leaking through either of those into the mag housing gets real expensive, so I use it.

            Bill:

So what your saying it really can't do harm. What would be a good sealant? It looked like it had some clear(Marine?) sealant on it before.

Am I missing something from my installation kit. I didn't see any gasket that would be used for the starter. Is it a gasket like the one used for the front housing or one l ike the exhaust?

Also, in the bag there are two o rings, the larger one goes around the valve cover, where does the littler one go?

                  Re: It begins!!

There is no gasket there. The small o-ring is for the oil pump if you needed to change it.

                    thanks, no oil pump.

Looking at the parts diaghram, it shows a grease fitting on PTO. what is this,I don"t have any grease in PTO .

                      Re: It begins!!

Look at the end of the PTO. There is a small, threaded hole where the PTO slips over the driveshaft. Put a grease fitting there.

Don't know what I was thinking when I wrote about the fitting. I have it, I think someone once called it a zirk. Thanks

                          Re: It begins!!

Everything so far went realtively easy. Probably going to start putting back in hull today. Just a couple of questions just to be safe.

                          1. The PTO went on easy, torque wrench set at 81 and clicked, but it almost seemed like it was as tight as it would get by hand. Is it torqued enough?

                          2. Didn't have a torque wrench that measures lbs per inch l thightenedd them as thight as the can go I didn't want to take the chance that they would snap.

                          3. Rebuilt/Clean carb, I noticed that on the new engine, the fuel line is on the opposite side of the one I had. If you were looking at the engine by the valve cover, it is to the left(rear) my old one was to the right(front). The carb pump is on the carb that services the front cylinder. Do I change, carbs or do I just run a fel line to pump?

                          If all goes well, I hope to be on the Water this weekend.;

It's a pluse line and you need a longer piece of 1/4 inch hose to connect it to the fuel pump.

Maybe someone has a easy way of doing this:

Everytime I try to connect upper and lower bath oil lines, the oil keeps coming out. I don't have a pincher , but I used a small clamp on it, but it still leaks into the hull. I can drain all the oil(this might not be a bad idea with a new engine, right?), but if i don't have to I wont.

I tried twice and both times it leaked and cleanup was a pain.
