  • XPL Project any advice???

2 summers go my buddy smoked the engine in his/now my 2000 xpl. I punched the cylinders out 40 over and have weisco's to put in. I also trued the crank because one side was off 4000ths. I ported it and plan on putting f/a, jet kit, and reed spacers in. Everything is going to be new and I also ordered have new crank seals, ect ect. I have no problem with motor work at all, for I do this stuff all the time, but I never did a 951 motor. Is there anything I should watch for or that is different about this motor??? I also plan on putting a block off plate on the oil pump, because I think that is what went. I also had a question about the little rubber o rings on the cylinder studs. Some broke while taking it apart, so whats the point of those things????Need new ones???

I have three pointers that will save you much grief.

Put 40ml of pump oil in the balance shaft gear cavity.

Be VERY careful running in those wiseco's.

Replace the fuel lines if not done already.

you can cut the wiscos very loose or toss them and get some good pistons both SBT and WSM pistons hold up 100% better then wiscos . make sure you use all new pipe mounts and put the pipe on very carfull if not perfect you will toast the engine in a few hrs .

wiscos if not cut right Seize fast , you need to warmup your engine before doing any WOT . if your jetting is not right they melt . one mistake and POOF there toast . you know if your cyls are cut enough for wiscos if your engine knocks when cold lol .

yes IMO the pipe mounts should be changed when ever the pipe is removed { that goes for all pipes } there cheep and in all the years of working on PWCs i have not had any pipes rattle off :-)

10/40 engine oil goes in the bal shaft . as for 2 stroke oil all i run is AMSOIL you can order it online it burns great and keeps the raves nice and clean and its a lot cheeper then Doo oil .

Yea I only run red racing amsoil in all my 2 stroke motors. My uncle owns a powersports dealer here where I live so I have no problem getting it. Which amsoil do you run?

later model shop manuals say pump oil in the balance shaft. I have run it since 950's came out as I like a gear oil on gears whenever its practical.

Earlier shop manuals said straight 30w.

I would run any good quality 90w gear oil.

fastjetski is right about the pipe mounts, new mounts each time pipe comes off is good insurance.

The oil that you add to the balance shaft is just for first starting it right??? It eventually burns out right???

No, the oil in the balance shaft cavity is seperate and does not burn out, if it does, somthing is very wrong. The oil stays there and lubes the CB shaft bearings. I used a sythetic gear oil designed for MX gear cases.
