I purchased a 96 xp last spring that was running very good and looked in near mint condition. Toward the end of summer after a lot of riding, it started hesitating at top end so I pulled the carbs and cleaned the screens which were clogged pretty bad. Took it back out and the motor completely stopped; now it's toast. One piston was burned very bad and needle bearings went everywhere in the motor. Have taken it apart and the rotary valve has a groove in the block and cover where a bearing got caught in there.I have not taken the crank out yet but it turns very easily by hand and the rods have no play in them. Question is do I repair this motor or would it be more cost effective to get another motor? I've got a friend at a cycle shop here locally that can fix the top end but the lower part will be up to me. I want to mention that rotary gear is not turning now, so I'm assumming there is a brass gear that is stripped at the bottom there somewhere, as I have dug out a small brass piece of metal by the crank when top was removed.

Re: 96 xp motor
if the grove in the case goes from hole to hole the case is shot , it would be better tp get a SBT shortblock and have a warranty , if you want to take some pix of the rotory service and post them you will get better advice if its shot or notPRIDE IN SERVICE

Re: 96 xp motor
I don't have the jet ski at my house at the moment, but I'll check that out. From what I remember the groove goes about halfway to other opening on the block , and the cover itself is grooved from one opening to the other. If that is true, what problems am I looking at in the lower case?
