  • Rebuilt 717 engine

Ok...I just rebuilt the top end of my 95' XP 717 engine. Put in new battery and fluids. The ski hasn't run for about three years. When I went to start it, it cranks, but really slow and sick sounding and it won't turn over. Is there anything I need to do to 'prime' the systems to restart fuel flow or any other ideas?

pour a little gas in the carbs and see what it does cranking slow and sick sounding does not sound like a carb problem to me more a starter or timing issue.

      Or a dead battery.

"won't turn over" as in too tight for the cranshaft to move around and around? or, just will not start ?

You may want to check the ground wire from the battery to where it connects to the engine. I ran into the same problem on a 96 SPX and it turned out to be a ground.

Also make sure the battery is actually in the jetski hull. If you are using poor quality jumper leads (i don't know if you actually are using any at all) with the battery outside of the jetski and the leads connected from the battery to the normal connectors, then you'll lose some cranking power. Poor quality jumper leads=bad transfer of current=no cranking power.....Just in case you didn't realise if you are using them:emoticont

                  Re: Rebuilt 717 engine

Well Bill, When I take the plugs out, I can see the pistons move freely in the cylinders and it sounds like it wants to turn over (besides having no spark). When I put them back in, it sounds bogged down and won't start.

                    Fryman,

If it is easy to turn by hand with the sparkplugs out and then it is difficult to get the motor to crank over with the starter motor with the sparkplugs in, you may need a new starter motor, ground cable, or battery.

IS OIL COMING OUT WHEN U CRANK IT WITH NO PLUGS. IF SO YOUR BOTTOM END IS LEAKIN OIL INTO THE CRANK AREA, IT IS HYDRO LOCKING. :emoticons

feel the starter. if it feels like its really hot then there is a good chance the starter is toast..
                        or you have bad connections..
                        my vote is the starter....
