  • 97 GSX MPEM Problem

I have a 97 GSX that blows the 5a fuse. I was told it was the stator so I replaced it and it still blows the fuse. Now I am told that it is the MPEM but I would need to know if it is before I buy a new one. If I remove the stator housing from the engine with it pluged up it will not blow the fuse. When I bolt the housing back to the engine it blows the fuse. I cleaned the flywheel and looks good but if I bolt the stator back to the engine it blows the fuse. Any help!

unplug EVERYTHING else plug in one at a time , you can test your stator for being grounded , if it comes down to it its possably the MPEM it could have shorted if somthing else was bad .

      Re: 97 GSX MPEM Problem

The stator being unplugged from the mpem will not allow the mpem to recieve any power, because the mpem and everything else in the ignition and charging system is grounded through the stator plate. What that means is you cannot blow the fuse without having the system grounded, so a bad stator plate may or may not be your problem.
The 1997 GSX has a seperate rectifier that costs alot less than the mpem. I would be inclined to replace it first to see if the short is in there.
