  • do I need to replace the front seal in 93 xxp?

Upon diagnosis of loss of spark in my 93 xp, I found oil in the bottom of my flywheel case, damaged magnets in the flywheel, and a shorted primary coil.

I am pretty sure it is due to a leaky front crankcase seal. I also noticed when I hand crank the engine I hear and see air leak from where the crankcase meets the seal.

Before I dig in, can some please answer these questions.

1: should I hear/see air leak from this seal, and do you agree it is the problem.

2: do I have to pull the engine, and split the crankcase to replace this seal?

3: any suggestions on where to get the best price on a replacement seal kit?

Thanks in advance (see attached photo)

    1) no and yes 2) yes 3) just buy a rebuilt crank here at SBT and drop it in.

you can replace the seal without splitting the case { not the best way to do it } you can also do it in the ski , but if you want to do it right pull the engine and tear it down and inspect the crank for damage . most of the time a bad seal will toast bearings .

thanks for the feedback, is it just a matter of prying out the seal with a screwdriver, and pressing in a new one.

I know I should go to the extreme and pull, but time is not on my side.

        Thanks

If that seal is really that bad, you'd better just bite the bullett and rebuild that motor. There is more wrong with it than just the seal.
