What Sealant to Use

One quick question...my shop manual says that for my 1999 GTI 717 motor to use synthetic grease on the threads of the water jacket/head bolts and loctite on the bolt shank, while the cylinder bolts are just the opposite. Which is correct and what loctite sholuld I use?

Blue loctite on the threads or bolt shank. I know it sounds funny, it confused me too. The manual syas to put the loctite on the bolt shank and greas the threads.

I use grease on both ends. But the 718, 787 motor service manual calls for synthetic grease under the head of the bolt and blue loc-tite on the threads.

On a 587 it calls for grease on both ends.
