    Just wondering what has to be done to change a wear ring and if its a pain?Its on a 91 si.I did a few searches but didnt see anything on my ski.I am a mechanic so im sure ill be able to figure it out but just got the ski and I have never worked on a sea-doo .Just looking for some tips or advise or also advise on anything else I should change while doing this?Thanks Steve

    Changing a wear ring is not that hard, if you have some reasonable tools. I say that, as it's commonly held that you can cut a wear ring out with a hack saw blade. Yes, you can, but it's a time-consuming and blister-inducing project. If you have an air compressor and a rotary grinder, it's much, MUCH easier. You have to be careful not to go too deep, but it can be a simple project.

    Unbolt the jet nozzle and steering cables. If installed correctly, there's probably silicone sealant holding it to the jet pump itself. Judicious use of a rubber maller (not metal or you'll surely break something) will loosen it.

    Make sure the drive shaft is ready to come out with the pump. Remove the zip ties from the coupling area, and be sure to look for the rubber bumper at the end of the shaft when it comes out of the PTO in the back of the motor (there's one one each end, so make sure they're in place when reinstalling).

    Unbolt the jet from the back of the boat. Again, silicone sealant is used to hold it in place, so take your time and gently remove it. Most shop manuals have a home-constructed pump puller illustrated, so use that if you must.

    The drive shaft will come out with the pump. After removing the jet pump and shaft, remove the shaft by prying out the rubber grommet in the fromt of pump. If it's worn, you can pull the shaft out straightaway, but be sure to replace the grommet with a new one.

    Getting the impeller off is the next challenge. Buy the tool that duplicates the end of the drive shaft from your local Sea-doo dealer, or look for one online. Should be about 10-12 bucks.

    Remove the cone from the back of the pump, watching for that nasty oil to come out. Clean it up and notice that the end of the shaft can be chucked into a vice. Do that, and use the removal tool on the impeller to remove the impeller. Threads are normal, turning left to loosen. Heating the impeller above 150 degrees helps to loosen the Loc-Tite if you need to.

    Pay particular attention the the thrust washers as you remove the impeller from the shaft. Make sure they go back in the same position.

    Now, take out the old wear ring. It's plastic material for the most part, so not hard to cut. Using your rotary grinder, start a groove from one edge to the other, such that the wear ring will have the pressure taken off of it. Remember, it's pressure fit into the housing. Watch your depth, litlle by little, deepen the groove. When you can, try to pry the edge up near where the groove is. If it's the right depth, you can get a screwdrive in there. That pulls the wear ring away from the housing, making the groove easier to cut and not so likely to cut into the housing. Just work at it, and you'll get it out.

    Clean the inside of the housing thouroughly with a wire brush. Cleanliness is the key here, so don't skimp on this part. You can use a putty knife to knock off the high corrosion areas, but don't scratch the housing.

    The new wear ring should be lubricated with soapy water or grease (my favorite). Place the new wear ring into the housing opening and drive it carefully in with a rubber mallet. Work around the edge, making sure it goes in straight. Drive it all the way in.

    When reinstalling your impeller, make sure it's straight and none of the vanes are bent. If they are, they'll take out the new wear ring in no time.

        Wear rings cost between $26 and $43, depending on source. eBay has one right now for $26 and I paid an SBT forum user $36. Try installer_man@yahoo.com. He's done me well on parts so far.

        BTW, there are two styles out there, OEM and aftermarket. The OEM has the plastic liner and there's a stainless steel-lined variety available. I'm sure the stainless steel is touted to last longer, but that's probably personal preference, I suppose.

        I WOULD invest in a Clymer's manual for your boat. That's $25 well invested...

            Excellent directions, one tip. Put the new wear ring in the freezer overnight. Makes it go in alot easier.

                Great tip on the freezer. Shrinks the metal, making it go in easier. Wish I'd thought of that, although with lubrication it went in pretty easy. Good tip...
