  • 93 GTS water in engine

I just bought a 93 GTS and a 93 XP. I bought them from someone who let them sit out for 2 years and never cranked them or anything. He only wanted 1,000 for both of them and the dual trailer, which was in great condition. The skis were in very good conditions considering they have been sitting outside for 2 years. the XP's engine was blown but he said the GTS was running fine when he last used it. So i took it home and unscrewed the spark plugs and I sprayed some WD-40 in there and a few minutes later poured a tad bit of oil in each cylinder. I waited 24 hours and then went out to see if I could turn the engine. I tried to turn the driveshaft and it wouldnt turn. I then went and got a pipe wrench and with a little effort it broke free and was able to be turned very smoothly. Well I then went and hooked up a spare boat battery I had to it and crossed my fingers hoping that the starter was good. I hit start and the starter worked fine, but water was shot out of cylinder about 15 feet in the air. I spent the next 30 minutes trying to get it all out, i didnt want the starter to burn up so I did it about 15 seconds then I let it rest about 30 then I would do it again. Well I never got it all out. Where could all of this water be coming from? If there was water in the exhaust could it back up into the cylinder? It has really good compression, I havent actually measured though. Another problem was that the spark plugs would not spark, I put a brand new one on it and there was no spark at all. Could this be the distributor?? I would appreciate anyones help, I am not a mechanic of any sort. I know enough about engines to feel comfortable working on these, as long as it does not entail tearing the actual engine apart. Any suggestions?

If it has been sitting that long with water in it, the engine is toast, and will need to be rebuilt/replaced.

what part of the engine does the water actually damage? If i had to rebuild it would I just need a top end rebuild kit?

it has mostl likely rusted the bearing in the crank and if high enough water the psitons are full of rust on the sides take off the head and see what you got in the top you may need to pull and tear the crank out and replace or since it has had the water stay in it it may be okay if you can find the no spark issue and get it running quickly and get it all relubed worst case you need new motor in both and then you are into it for 3000 with two good skis and trailer not a bad deal or you need one motor and it is even a better deal.

I was wondering how the water got into the pistons in the first place, and how it would get into the crankcase. When the starter turns the engine it sounds fine, I dont hear any grinding or scraping. I guess I will take the head of tomorrow and see what it looks like. I hope I can salvage it. I just want to get it running good so I can sell it and then with that money buy a new engine for the XP, and still have money left over. What do you think I would pay for a used SLT or XP Engine?

it woudl depend on where you get it you will need a 657 I believe and I will rebuilding one in about a week or so. If you are in no hurry aill get in touch when I am finished. As far as water getting in it it could have died on the lake and been towed in improperly and got water in it it could be that he didnt flush it properly leaving water in it many things its hard to tell without history on it.

Yes I would appreciate you letting me know. I am not in a big hurry to get anything done to it. Do you have any clue though what could cause it not to produce a spark?

              Thanks

i have a SBT 657 that a dealer said was bad so the guy went for a new OEM engine { come to find out the dealer didnt put the fly wheel on right } but who they going to blame SBT or them lol . anyhow it has less then an hr on it . { not under warranty } 400 bucks plus shipping no core needed .

but if you have good compression you might be ok anyhow .

thanks for the offer. If I end up needing a new engine I'll take you up on it. I hopefully will not need one though. It does really good compression, but I need to measure it to get an exact reading. I am going to take it out tomorrow or the next day and have a better look at it. Is this what you would recommend?
What would you recommend I look for when I take it out?

                  Thanks again

look for getting all that water out look to see if you are getting fuel to the carbs rebuild the carbs regardless and check compreesion of course as well as opening that head and taking a look at it alo make sure you check that pump. there is a great article here on what to look for in a used ski let it guide you. I also just checked and you do need a 657 (for the XP) wanted make sure memory was right.
