  • 01 gs taking on water - resonator?

Hello everyone. I am having an issue with a 2001 seadoo GS, with no aftermarket mods. I had been riding ~2 hours down at the river yesterday, when I came out of wave and the engine died. After a few tries, I managed to get the engine up and going again, at which point I started to head back towards the trailer. However, The engine died again when I encountered another boat's wake. I checked the engine comartment and noticed 4-5 inches of water sitting in the bottom. At this point, we tied the craft up and pulled it back to the trailer. While sitting on the trailer, before pulling the hull plugs, I checked to see if there were any obvious leaks in the hull, but didn't notice any (I was a little freaked out, and could have easily overlooked something). Anyway, we drained the hull, got it home, pulled the sparkplugs, and a bit of water shot out of the cylinder head when cranked. After doing this for a bit, and some WD40, I got the engine running like a champ again. With the flush kit, I noticed no leaks in any of the cooling system components.
We put it into the river again this morning and within 20 minutes the engine compartment was in 3-4 inches of water. We got it back to the ramp, and took it home. While inspecting it, I noticed a small hole (1/4" diameter, looks like a blowout) in the upper resonator of the exhaust system. It could have been there for weeks or it could have happened yesterday. I don't know. Anyway, I was wondering if this is a possible source for the water leakage. The part is above the water line, but I'm not sure of its internal workings. Sorry for the rambling message. Anyone ever have any issues like this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff

make sure your 2 bailer hoses are zip tied to the top of your ski { 2 clear lines that go to the black boxes } also if any pump work has been done OR not check to see if the Orings are in the ventury and also your ventury tubes . also check for brokin engine mounts and the carbon ring for damage .
also next ride out leave the seat on the dock :-)

Thanks for the quick response. The bailer hoses appear to be fine and are not clogged. I checked the pump system including the drive shift this afternoon and it appeared to be fine. The rest of the drive system also appears to be in good condition. There is certainly nothing obvious like tears, cracks, warping, etc. I looked at the engine mounts this evening and don't see any cracks, etc. However, I am not a mechanic and only play one when something goes wrong, so I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for. Can I rule out the upper resonator as the source of this problem?

      Thanks,

      Jeff

you should try to fill the engine compartment and see if there is any place of the bilge that is crack or ani outside component that can let water in.
        check it and see

You cannot have a hole in your resonator, or it will leak water into the hull, along with exhaust fumes.

Typically, a problem like yours is caused by a bad driveshaft seal, a leaking exhaust hose, a hole in a muffler or resonator, a missing bailer tube in the nozzel, or a waterline that has come loose. Keep looking, you will find it.
