  • 1996 Seadoo XP Help

I have friend with a 1996 Seadoo XP that was stored last year running fine. No fuel stabilizer was added and it was not fogged. The gas was low so we refilled. Ski cranks sometimes but is hard to start. Will idle out of water and as it warms up the idle speed increases. In water ski has no low end. When it planed out it ran for 200 yards and shut off and will not restart. Since then will intermittently crank on trailer.

Check the compression. If the compression is good, Replace the spark plugs, snip back the plug wires and try again. If it is still the same, I would pull off the carbs and look in there. Good Luck.

Snipping the plug wires will not fix this ski.

Start with a compression test. If no damage is indicated (155psi is standard compression), then start rebuilding your complete fuel system from the carbs to the gas tank.
There is tons of info here about rebuilding carbs and checking the fuel systems in these skis.

Just as Bill said the old gas just will not fire anymore at the rate that you need it to you need to empty that tank pull your carbs and check your lines to make sure they are good to go. Once you do rebuild your carbs make sure you do the proper tests on them as far as pop off and pressure testing the needle and seats it will save you time later if they are not correct. (meaning you woint break down becasue they are leaking or pop off is not correct and have to pull them to do them a second time).

I checked the compression and it is 140 on both cylinders. I also checked the spark and it is really weak on one plug and strong on the other. Trimming the plug wire back didn't make a difference. It starts and runs great one second, then you try to start it a minute later and it wont start.

Try jumping it with a car batt- and see if it starts every time. MAKE SURE CAR IS NOT RUNNING WHEN YOU DO THIS.

I'm glad I didn't start rebuilding the carbs. The problem was a frayed black wire. It's the small black wire that goes from the battery into the electrical box. The insulation was on the wire but it was broken on the inside. I replaced the wire and the ski runs top notch.

Bad low end power, planed out for 200 yards and shut off. Does not sound like a bad wire to me. Although, I understand you do have a bad ground wire, I think you have some cabureator and/or fuel supply issues too.
