  • 1996 seadoo challenger/weak hole shot and top end

i have a 1996 seadoo challenger, with a single engine 787 rotax. the carbs have been rebuilt, along with the fuel pump. the craft starts up fine and idles good at 1500 rpm,in the water. it has good throttle response throughout the rpm range. the problem is that the hole shot is lugging before it gets on plane.i am running at about 6k rpm and 32mph.there is no miss upon accelleration and during fast accelleration, she gets up to 6k rpm right away.the low speed jet is set at 1 1/4 and the hi spd is at about1/8. there is no hole in the jet pump. no water loading up into craft. the gate is not falling down over the nozzle. the impellor blades and wear ring are not damaged and drive shaft is notbent or clogged. any help would be appreciated.

    Darkfish 44,
I have a 1997 challenger and seem to be experiencing the same performance level as you are. Top end at 45 m.p.h. when everyone else tells be that they go 50 MPH. It takes a bit to get it up and moving and is maxed at 6000 rpm and some change. Not the 7,000 that you hear about.

I also have pre-mature shut-down of the engine that seems to be a grounding or DESS key or Post or or or or problem. I get 50 feet and she shuts down. Sometimes it is 5 miles, but it does shut down eventually and often. Have you had any problems related to this type of performance? I also have a fuel guage that is not working. My understanding is that it is a popular problem with these units. Where are you having it serviced and what is your experience with the service? I've owned it 2 weeks now and it is not a trouble free experience by any means.
Finally, is the 787 Rotax the 110 h.p. engine? No manual came with the boat.

I just bought the same boat but had heard about the weak hole shot and top end. I am in the process of putting in a new skat trak impeller (16/21) and wear ring to see if it makes any difference. It will be done by the 21st...I am currently waiting on the new impeller to arrive. From what I have heard the stock impeller in the seadoo for that time frame was terrible.

I like Skat Trak swirl impellors in boats. They really make a difference in accelleration.
