97 xp wont start

97 xp cranks over fine compression is 160 160. fuel is getting on the plugs.
The only thing odd is the spark It starts out firing strong for the first 2-3 revolutions then starts to fade out and the engine wont fire .Any ideas?

Could be the stator is going out. But do you have a new battery? Is the rectifier working properly and the battery is being charged up as you ride?

your battery must have a strong 12 volts when cranking to keep the spark going . a weak battery and or starter that draws to much will kill the spark .

Thanks for replying. the battery had 12.56 v and the engine cranks steadily. Are there any multi meeter tests that might shed some light.

Yes. After seeing how many volts are in your battery when the engine is not running, start the motor, rev it to 5500 rpm and check it again. It should read well over 13 V DC, but not more than 15VDC.
