  • Primer for a 97XP

I am going to install a primer on my 97XP. I know that it has a accelerator pump that should prime the carbs but I don't seem to get a squirt of gas coming out of the accelerator pump when I squeeze the throttle. I removed the fuel line on the outlet port to verify if any gas is squirted and nothing comes out.

What I am planning on doing is using the hole where the choke knob is currently. I just want to make sure that it would work with that much primer line (basically would have to go from the handle bar down to the front of the ski and then back to the carbs. I like the idea of not having to raise the hood to pump the primer.

If somebody has pictures of the way that they installed the primer on a 97XP that would be helpful.

    Thanks

Why not rebuild your accellerator pump so everything works in the first place?

      Re: Primer for a 97XP

How do I go about rebuilding it? I looked at my parts manual and it appears that the only part number is for the entire assembly. I looked on another web page that has microfiche and it appears that it is an expensive part to replace.

Is there any replacement parts for the accelerator pump and if so what are the part numbers that I would need.

      Thanks

You should be able to order a kit through a dealer.

take it apart and clean it , most of them stick and dont pump . 99% of the times theres no bad parts in them . unless you set the carbs right they wont work right without the pump working . the primer kit will work fine but wont make up for a non working accellerator pump

If the accelerator pump is not working what problems would I be having.

A low end hesitation on take off.

It does not seem to have a hesitation at take off. But I don't see a squirt when I press the throttle.

Then maybe it's been rejetted and the pump disabled.

Is there a way of seeing if the pump has been disabled? Both the fuel hoses are still attached and when I squeeze the throttle it moves the accelerator pump.

I will try to get the pump off tonight and tear it down to see if I can see if anything is wrong with it.

At this point I am so fed up with it that I will probably just remove the choke and add a primer. Will the primer work if I install it into the hole on the handlebar where the choke is currently located. Just don't know if that would be to much primer line since it has to go all the way down the hood and then back to the carbs.

Stick a pin in the injector tubes, see if they are clogged. It doesn't matter where you put the primer.

                          Re: Primer for a 97XP

I picked up a primer and temporarly tried it out last night by squirting two shots into each carb. The ski fired up by just hitting the start button. It has never started that quick.

I am planning on installing the primer just to the right of the fuel filler tube so that all that I have to do is raise the hood to pump it.

The question that I have is when I remove the choke knob from the steering column I will want to put a plug into the opening. Does somebody know what size hole the choke opening is in the handlebar?

                            Re: Primer for a 97XP

Got the choke out and mounted the primer pump beside the fuel filler. I inserted the block off plug and nipple plug but they are a loose fit. I thought that they should have been a very tight fit. Does somebody have any suggestions? I really don't want to JB weld them in place but if that is the only way I guess that I will. Also do you suggest to put the nipple plug on top or bottom?

You better jb weld them, or you will be pumping gasoline into the hull !

It doesn't matter , top or bottom.
