  • 96 xp driveshaft question

Hello all I was looking for some help .I was going to put all new parts around the driveshaft to re seal it.After I took out the driveshaft the piece that i believe is called the seal carrier on the shaft is stuck on the driveshaft and doesnt move is this supossed to be stationary or move?In the manual its called a floating carrier so i figured it moves? Also how does the carbon seal actually keep the water out it only seems to be pushed up against the seal carrier by the boot.Just doesnt seem to water proof to me unless im missing something here ..thanks in advance steve

There are two O rings inside that seal carrier. You need to get two hands in there and pull it apart. It will be tight. the rubber boot pushes the carbon seal and this makes the seal.

The steel sleeve moves rearward exposing an oring or steel clip that sits in a groove on the driveshaft and holds the ring in place. Remove the clip or oring and the driveshaft will slide back through the steel collar. Always replace the oring with the upgraded steel circlip when you put it back together.
