  • spark problems on 97 gtx

Hi, Does anyone have any suggestions i am trying to get my 97 gtx running again. i jus got it back from a carb rebuild and some other stuff a couple weeks ago, it has been running alright, although the other day i fired it up and was jus idling infront of my cottage warming it up, sat there for 5 mins or so and as i started to pull away about 50-75 percent throttle, it jus droped, as if i pulled the lanyard, although i didn't and it would not start again. after looking into it, i found out i have no spark at first i thought it was the coil, ends up its not and i now have a spare coil, it cranks over, does the double beep and eveyhting which make me think it isn't the mpem, i jus read a post about the batterie so i am gonna check that out tomorow, is there anything else people can suggest i check while up there as i don't have internet acces when at the cottage.

    Thanks in advance.

post more when you check the battery . if the battery checks out you might want to pull the front mag cover and check for water or a brokin pickup .

First check the easy stuff like is the rear electrical box full of water? Is the fuse good?

How about the fuses on the MPEM in the front electrical box?

The mag cover is the cover on the front of the engine under the exhaust pipe. It has an oil pump mounted on the front of it. Inside is the magneto, flywheel, stator and a ignition pickup to send the power to the battery and signal to the coil for when to fire the sparkplugs.

Sometimes, when looking for spark in the daylight, it is very hard to see the spark. Use shade or nighttime when looking for spark.

Remove the sparkplug boots from the sparkplug cables and snip off about 1/4 inch to get to some new wire and re-install the sparkplug boots, making sure you get them screwed all the way into the wire. Then look for spark by gronding the sparkplugs and cranking the engine.

Always use a fully charged battery when testing an electrical problem.

all fuses were fine, although as i kinda expected it must be the batterie i was getting 12.5v sitting, and 10.5v cranking, so i will trying throughing in a new batterie the only thing i don't get is how random this was like it was outta know where.
