I just finished carbs on my gtx. Took to lake seems to run good, The only thing is has slight hesitation from idle to about 5500 the takes off quick up to 6600. I lean low side screws just a little at lake but hard to get to with air box on. Next question It use to turn 6900 to 7000, I got the oil pump line set a little past the perfect lineup mark, could this be what keeps it from reving up as much as did before? I started with low screws about 1-1/4 out. any help is appreciated. thanks

Re: 97 gtx
The trick is to lean out the low speed needles until you get a slight but noticable hesitation upon applying the throttle ( with boat in the water), then adjust them open until the hesitation goes away completely, but do not overly richen the mixture. If your high speed adjusters are closed like they should be, this will make the motor the leanest possible and still accellerate cleanly. This will allow for the maximum rpm with whatever jetting you have in there.
A 1997 GTX in perfectly new condition is not susposed to rev 6900 rpm, although it is not unheard of with a bit of high speed cavatation going on. The oem rating is between 6780 and 6830 rpm.Bill O'Neal
Re: 97 gtx
You described the way it would act if it were bogging from being too rich, until it burnt off the excess gasoline, or if it were too lean to perform on the bottomend power range, but once it hits the high speed power range it takes off and goes. You need to figure out wether it is too lean or too rich to accellerate properly. Try opening the low speed adjusters 1/4 turn and see if it gets better or worse.Bill O'Neal
