  • 96 xp rebuild????

i just bought a 96 xp today. the motor is in pieces and im looking around on the net to see what i want to do. it has riva crbs and heads and the inside of the cylinders look a little rusted. im an amateur at motors and wondered if anyone could give me some input . im wondering if i shoul rebuild or sell the parts and put the money to a motor already rebuilt. help!!! more to add. im lookinf through a box of parts. the crank and pistons seem "tight" only thing is i didnt find anything on the net for riva making a carb for a 782cc and think that maybe someone was going to customize this one to this ski.

If the cylinders are rusted then its possible there rust in other places. Crank and bearings. If you are not sure about the history of the motor then i would recommend a rebuilt. It will save you time and money in the long run. Just remember SBT only accepts OEM parts for core returns. You will need a stock head to return your motor as a core.

How about the rest of it? Maybe you can get away with a top end if you are sure the bottom end is sound.

looks good guy i bought it from rebuilt the xh i have and didnt get around to rfinishing this one and it sat for a year the rust came off with wd40 and a rag.some residue left. i thought maybe honing the cylinders and rebuilding by replacing the rings. i just dont know all the little "tricks" to rebuild to a good solid motor. does your company only do rebuilds with cores?? would some one be able to give me a rebuild quote on what i have with any info. you need from me and pics???

If you are asking about SBT they only do sales with core exchanges. If the cylinders will clean up with a hone then go with that. I have honed alot of slightly rusted cylinders over the yrs. As long as the rust has not pitted the cylinder walls and the bores are within specs you are good to go.

Re: 96 xp rebuild???? riva carbs and heads

i appreciate the info . anyone know anything about the riva carbs . i would assume they would be worth the trouble to fit them up. i need to get more tech info from the carbs and see what they are and dig through the other parts to see exactly what i have. i need this ski to top 57 to 58 mph so my girlfriend ski wont pass me. shes on a polaris slx liquid triple. i cant have that lol

A 1996 XP goes about 56-57 mph stock.
Riva had a aftermarket company put their name on some carbs and sold them as RIVA carbs. They might be Novi or Ed Brazina carbs. Ask Riva.
