  • 96 GTX plug fouling

The rear plug fouls and is coated in oil after about 10 minutes of running. The ski starts runs good for 10 minutes and then the rear cylinder drops bc of the plug. I've used 2 new plugs thinking that it's the plug. Any idea of what to look for before I take it into the shop?

Thanks in advance to all that read\respond

try swapping the spark plug boots when you have them off snip the wires back a little to show some fresh wire .

And if that doesn't work, install a new needle and seat in the pto carb.

          Re: 96 GTX plug fouling

So should I check the compression and bring the ski in to a professional to look at? Don't want to mess with things if it sounds that bad...

          Thanks

What should the compression be? Got 130 in both cylinders the last time it was checked.

IF the gauge is accurate, it's about 15 lbs. low. If they are even I would chauk it up to a bad gauge though.

Thanks for the quick responses. I have another newbie question. Will the motor run if the the cylinder is toasted...the ski is at the cottage and I'm thinking worse case senario now....even sent a email looking into the shipping costs to Canada on a SBT motor

130 psi is fine if you are at a fairly high altitude.

It may run, but there is no rule - it depends on WHY the compression is low - what kind of damage there is (if any).

                      Winnipeg is at 700', Bill.

                        Re: 96 GTX plug fouling

The test was before I picked up the ski and had troubles with it. The orginal plug fouled when we put it in the water and then it was changed it with a spare which fouled immediately...chalked it up to another bad plug. Then I put in a new plug and it ran for about 5 minutes before the rear cylinder stopped...pulled the plug and it was soaked with oil. The motor started after that and ran on the front cylunder...stopped running about a minute after I started it....after the post from Bad** I started my paranio concerns that it's ceased. Just wanted to know if I should be overly concerned or if it sounds like a spark\tune up issue.

                        Thanks

                          Re: 96 GTX plug fouling

I would be leaning more toward blowing inner crank seals at this point. Do a fresh compression test.

Dropped the ski off at the shop and he wants to tear it down to figure out what's wrong. If it sounds like the inner seals, am I better off getting a rebuild from SBT then going down the road of trying to have someone fix it.

                              Re: 96 GTX plug fouling

Could be as simple as a bad sparkplug boot connection to the wire coming from the coil. That would make that sparkplug foul out and drop the clyinder.

But the important thing here is if the clyinder has siezed it should blow less compression than the other clyinder.

OEM specs are 155 psi at sea level.
