battery light

I am considering buying a 1996 GTI that is priced right but has a battery light that won't go out. Is this a big deal? Also the owner said the last time he had the ski out it ran for about 3hours and then stalled and all the lights came on. After letting it sit for awhile it started right up and he made it home. Is this what would happen with a low battery or is there something else that could cause the stalling? Thanks for any advice you can provide.:D

make sure its chargering , it could be a bad battery or retifre or stator .stalling could be carbs and it could be seizing up
