That is not the same as testing the charging system. When a rectifier goes bad it creates electronic noise that screws up the CDI, making the ignition spark erratically.

Without removing the wires connecting it to the stator and the mpem, I cannot see how it is out of the circuit. You only disconnected the charging wire to the battery by removing the fuse. That is why no manual will ever suggest you do such a thing to find out if the rectifier is good or bad.
In less time than it takes to open the electrical box and remove the fuse, you can read a multimeter connected to the battery with the engine reved up to 5500 rpm. If it is not in the mid 13 to mid 14 volt range, your rectifier ( or stator) is not working correctly to charge the battery.
If the rectifier is bad, the engine will run very erratically. Eliminate that possibility by testing it. Otherwise you may be here for days trying to figure out why your motor isn't reacting to carb/fuel fixes.

removed carbs and found problem with one gasket replaced and refitted. now runs fine on trailer responds with no hesitation. put in water no hesitation but will not rev over 3500rpm under load. i bypassed the fuel selector no change
On my 96 GTX I had a problem like this that it would not rev past 3500 in the water. I had to turn the red caps in on the rave valves and that solved my problem. I only had to turn them in about 1 turn they had loosened up so that they were flush with the black cover.
Dave, I hate to burst your bubble, but even if the rave valves were cemented into the clyinders, it would rev up to about 6000 rpm. I do not know what you did to fix your motor, but turning the red caps on the raves would not have made your motor go from 3500 to 6700+ rpm.

Bill I understand what you are saying but my ski wouldnt rev up past 3500 rpm and i looked at my budys 97 gtx and his red caps were in more than mine so I cranked mine in to about where his were and I tried the ske again and it would rev up and go. Dont ask me it just cleared up and went. Maybe it was the rectifier. Just thought I would through it out there.
