  • 97 GTI carb question again

Hi again, *just need to know*-
my 97 gti 720 single carb needs to have the high speed adjuster set to 0 (turned all the way in).
When I bought it and dissasembled the engine, the rear piston was scuffed.
The carb had been set to about 1 1/2 turns out on the high speed.
Would this extra fuel have caused the piston damage?
Or what would this also cause? ie running poorly/lack of high speed/power ?

    The ever wondering
    Joe

"scuffed" could mean that you injected water in that clyinder, or it had an air leak and ran lean in that clyinder.

Opening the high speed adjuster 1 turn would make the ski run rich and with poor overall performance if it has the oem spark arresstor still on the carb.
A rich condition did not sieze the rear piston.

      Thanks Bill.

I would suspect, then, the water ingestion. Do not know the prior owner as it was an insurance writeoff. Engine was *plumb* full of water (opened throttle, water dancing inside engine).

Strangely, this thing sat outside all winter (we get -45. up here) full of water, and nothing was cracked when taken apart. Seems good after about 6 hours riding now (rebuilt).

Makes me wonder about how I worried so much about doing the antifreeze add procedure when I winterized my old 91 GT. hmmmm even took off the muffler and added antifreeze...
