Sometimes starts/Sometimes Whines

What could this be?
My 1999 GSX RFI 787cc.
When I press the start button-------Sometimes it starts like normal and other times it sounds like something is spinning but not connecting (Whines).

Sounds to me like the starter gear is turning but it has not engaged.

Any thoughts?

You have a problem with the starter bendix drive (or overrunning clutch drive). Contact Chris at http://www.1fastski.com/ or at ccox91@comcast.net He is near Egg Harbor Township, and can easily handle that problem for you.

Same problem here. On mine, the gear broke loose from the other piece.

thanks john . i would be more then happy to help if needed 609 926 5100 it could be the starter or just a bad ground cable .
