  • 99 xpl TPS question

I am only turning 6500rpms. I unplugged the TPS and it did nothing to change the performance. I also checked it with a voltmeter and it only showed 3 volts and still 3 volts at WOT.

May be a stupid question but does it sound like the TPS needs replaced. Are theri any other test I can do to verify before I drop the $?

I have checked all the other items ie raves, plugs, filters, wear ring/impeller etc...

did you check the exhust pipe for leaks ? you wont see it leak but you can check it by wraping a rag around it and run WOT see if the rag gets wet also check the carbs for water after riding . the cable should not couse a drop in RPMs

      Re: 99 xpl TPS question

Yes the TPS cable will cause a drop in rpm.
The TPS tells the ignition moudle which curve to be in at certain load ranges as the cable moves.

The TPS voltage output should be 5 VDC from zero to 80% of it's movement. Past 80% it should read zero volts dc.

      Replace the tps cable.

Bill, would you mind going into a little more detail on the procedure?

Where do you connect meter to measure output?

Motor running or just have key in.....etc.

        Thanks

          Re: 99 xpl TPS question

Find the cable adjuster on the cable, it is located under the glove box of an XPL.
Find the TPS switch in the cable. Connect voltmeter between the white/black and ground or use the black wire.
Do not unplug the harness. Slip test leads in along the wires to test the switch. DO NOT INSTALL THE TETHER, just depress the start/stop switch. The voltage will show for 15-20 seconds. If it goes out, depress the switch again.

Volt meter should read 5 volts from zero to 80% of throttle movement. Over 80% should read zero volts.
If the meter reads 5 volts at full throttle you need to adjust the cable. You would need to shorten the cable at the adjuster so the cable will not pull so far.
Never attempt to take apart the TPS switch. If it does not come into proper adjustment as described above, replace the TPS cable.
