  • Rave valve question!!

I had my 99 xpl out this weekend and it started to run kind of crappy. Almost if the plugs where fouled. When I got back to the boat ramp I took out the plugs and they looked fine. I cleaned them and put them back in and the same thing. Kind of boggy. So when I got home I pulled the caps off the rave valves and on of them was sticking. Could that be causing my problem. I havent got a chance to take them out and clean them yet.

That may be part of the problem. There is probably other issues too, like dirty clogged up carbureators.....

Well to answer your question the rave valves where very dirty. I cleaned them and it help a little bit. But When the problem started happening I was running on reserve and I think that when the motor was rebuilt the mechanic just poured oil into the gas tank for break in and it sunk to the bottom because when I pulled the seperator off it had about an inch of oil in it. And when I run my ski on the trailer it smokes really heavy. I have not got a chance to take it out since cause it got kind of cold and I have had to work every weekend for the past couple of weeks.

The seperator had an inch of oil in it? I have never seen that before.

You better clean the whole fuel system, or at least check it.
For the seperator to get oil in it like that it must have pulled it from the bottom of the fuel tank. It got into the seperator then it would travel to the fuel selector valve and ultimately to the carbs where it may have clogged up the internal fuel filters. That, if true, could cost you a motor.

                  Re: Rave valve question!!

I started to take the seat off so that I could look down into the fuel tank and see what is going on. There is only about an inch of gas in the tank and it started running bad when it was on reserve so i think that it must have sucked up some oil off the bottom of the tank. I think that the guy that rebuilt it for me just dumped the break in oil into the tank and it all sunk to the bottom. But like I say I havent had much time to mess with it. But it make sense to me because the think smokes like a freight train when I run it on the trailer.

                    Re: Rave valve question!!

Sounds to me like he may have dumped it in there expecting you to add fuel later. Did you fill the tank with gasoline after you picked it up and before you first started the engine? Generally, it will mix with the gasoline just fine.........

I put gas in the tank before i took it out. I also thought that it would have mixed fine with all that banging around from the choppy water.

The oil will mix up just fine when trailering or riding the ski or shaking the ski. Somebody must have started it up before the fuel was added to the oil in the tank for it to be so thick inside of the seperator.
