Towing

Although my manual for my '04 GTX 4TEC requires the intake line to be pinched, a mechanic at my dealer told me that was a carry over from 2-strokes. I find that hard to believe as one or more exhaust valves could be open allowing water to enter the cylinder(s). Is my manual correct or the dealer mechanic/service department?
