  • Won't turn over when engine is warm...?

    Hey Guys,

My 94 Seadoo SPi runs great and fires right up...when it's cold. Once the motor is all warmed up and you have been riding it for a while it will not turn over, well it does but, very very slow. If you wait 20 mins or so it will fire up again and away you go... What the could this be...? Just desn't make much sence. Why would it run so good and start so easy when cold, but then not turn over when warm..? Must be the starter/solinod..?

    Check list:

    I installed a new battery..
    Checked the cable connections..
Pulled the plugs and turned it over that way, goes a little faster but no real difference.
Turns over by hand easy with plugs out..

I'm going to pull the starter out of it, but I'm really just wondering if anyone has ever seen this problem before...?

    Thanks,

i was wondering if it's possible to remove the starter while the ski is installed? that must be a real procedure if u had to remove the engine.

Ya it's not the funnest job to do. But I have taken a few out in my time.. Takes about 10 mins to get it out and about 20 - 30 to get it in...

        Thanks

Jus use an extension and socket to get the mounting bolts out.

Yes, you probably need to replace the starter motor.

Just got it out and holy crap.... it was full of water..! YIKES..

The brushes look OK but rust everywhere... I'm taking it in to my local Starter Shop to see if they can rebuild it.. MY save the old girl.

                  Thanks for all your help...

Don't waste your money or your time!!!! I have yet to see any "repaired" PWC starter last more than a few weeks...then the starter gets replaced with a new one...The main reason for this is that the parts that wear out or fail are not available.....Sure they are listed on the parts diagram, but most are coded NA (not available) or NLA (no longer available).

Scott, in your case, you will also need to open the magneto housing, find the cause of the water intrusion, remove the flywheel, and clean the rust from the stator, the flywheel, and also clean out the magneto housing to prevent any damage and also to prevent the corrosion from reoccuring. Then properly re-assemble the magneto components and the mag housing and cover.

Do yourself a favor....Buy one of these: http://www.sbtontheweb.com/Merchant2...tegory_Code=39 and install it just once...be done with it.

It would also be important to figure out where the water is coming from. The bilge will never really have enough water to cause starter damage. Hopefully the cooling system is not leaking within the engine.

I honestly doubt that the cooling system would be leaking into the mag housing.......But a good point is brought up, find the cause of the leak before buttoning everything up to run again.....

Oh I know where the water comes from... I tend to submerg the machine now and then.. Nice big waves in Lake Ontario... 10 - 12 footers so needless to say the machine takes on it's fair share of water. Looks like the gasket where the starter is installed was missing..? Used machines, you never know what might be missing.. OH well I still have to take off the front plate and dry this machine out. Hope to get out later this week as the we always have good storms this time of the year..
