  • 97 GSX carb problems

i have a 97 gsx with a 2yo sbt motor in it, the motor before this was sank in salt water and then garaged for 2 years with no cleaning
the new motor runs good but theres a prob with the carbs....they have been through about 4 times, the ski is hard to start, like its not getting gas or its getting to much, i myself think its flooding cause you can smell gas when you take the seat off. once you get it started it seems to run ok, at WOT it feels like another carb kicks in after a few secondsother then that it runs fine till you need to start it again....any ideas what i need to do???

when you went though the carbs did you check for a leaking needle and seat ?

and have you tryed cutting the sparkplugs wires back ? if not pull the boots off the wires and cut back to show fresh wire .

List the parts that you installed in the carbs when you "went through them 4 times". What did you set the pop off pressures to?

Like Chris said, I think it is too rich for whatever reason.

        Re: 97 GSX carb problems

i put everything in the carb kits it, new needle and spring.(i matched all the new parts to the old ones) gaskets diophrams, "O" rings.......last night i took them back off to just look around...i put my little hand pump on to feel the popoff(my pump has no gadge) and was never able to make it pop....i no i was putting over 20psi to them.....i put the silver springs in and closed them up...if i chock the heck out of it it will start, i can let the choke go at that point and it will run great till you shut it off for say 10 mins....then you got to chock the heck out of it again

            Re: 97 GSX carb problems

Anytime you must choke an engine to make it run, means it is not getting enough fuel from the carbs to make it run ( or start in your case).
First try adding fuel by adjusting the low speed carb adjusters out some to add more fuel when starting.

I had and eerily similar problem with my 97 GSX. It turned out to be the battery. Sometimes it would start and other times not. The battery that was in the ski was strong enough to turn the motor over fine. I replaced it with an ODYSSEY Drycell PC625 and it cranks like it's supposed to now.

                Re: 97 GSX carb problems

That is because your ignition has a safety feature that turns it off if the voltage drops below 10.1 volts DC.

A bad battery, or cables, or starter motor can use so much of the batteries energy, there isn't enough left to run the ignition. An electronic ignition can be damaged if it doesn't get enough voltage, so they put a shut-off feature into it to protect it.
