  • 720 Flywheel Slipped

My flywheel slipped on my '95 XP about a quarter of an inch down the magneto. Anyone heard of this? I think it's from vibrations, since my motor seems loose on the mounts. The flywheel actually rubbed on the motor side of the case. Should I try to push it back, or get a new flywheel/mag assembly? Any other causes? Thanks, Joe

The taper of the crank and flywheel along with the woodruff key hold everything in place. If the flywheel is now rubbing on the case, I would think that you have major damage. Seen a 700 Yamaha this summer with same symptoms and the motor was an entire loss.

Did the flywheel slip, or has the starter ring gear moved towards the edge of the flywheel. This is a common issue with this engine design.

This reply is for John Kubiak. Yes, the starter ring gear moved towards the end of the flywheel. I think I caught it early enough to prevent any other damage. If this is a common problem, please fill me in. Thanks, Joe

This post, although it is about a Sea-Doo jet boat, applies directly to your problem:

                Re: 720 Flywheel Slipped

Awesome, John. Thanks for the insight. I'm going to use some other loctite product that seals cylinder sleeves into the cylinders while I press the starter gear back on. I'll also use a punch to make it permanent. Who would have thought this kind of thing would happen? At least we figured it out. Thanks again, Joe

Still, it is a much better outcome than others suggested!:emoticonc
