  • troubleshooting 96 GTX

I have a 96 GTX with a six month old SBT engine. I ran it last weekend
for about an hour, it was running fine. I ran the last mile wide open and thought I smelled plastic burning. After it was on the trailer and I tried to restart it to blow out the water, it wouldn't start. I pulled the lanyard and reinstalled it and the engine started. When I tried to start the engine recently, it wouldn't start. Any suggestions?

More information is needed. You said it wouldn't start. did it crank over? did it just click? Did it do nothing?

Follow the black cable from the battery to the side of the starter motor. See if it is broken or needs to be removed and cleaned. If that does not fix it, try jumping the starter relay in the box next to the battery. If when you jump the two big lugs on the relay, the starter motor works, replace that relay. If you jump the relay and it does not make the starter motor turn, replace the starter motor.

The starter operated and the engine rotated in the normal fashion. It acted as though the ignition went away.

First thing, look in the coil box for water.

Check for spark at the sparkplugs.

If you have spark, fuel and compression and it will not start, remove the magneto cover and see if the ignition pickup is broken. ( if it is the pickup broken, you may not have spark or you might have intermittent spark).
