  • Cooling System pin hole

    The main pipe (TUY.COL.PEINT *TUNE PIPE P. Includes 1 - 4.
274001091 (replaces 274000770) ) of my 2000 Seadoo GTI has developed a pin-hole leak at one of the round weld points. Not sure why, but there are a few of these round weld points on the pipe and each one has this little pin-head size depression in the center of the weld, almost begging the question..."Why would the pipe be desgined with the little tiny welded shut holes in the first place. Anyway, now when the engine runs, water comes squirting out the hole and all over the engine bay. Can this hole be welded shut and the pipe (expensive) re-used or is the pin hole there by degin to let me know that the interior surface has deteriorted to the point it must be replaced. When I look inside the large opening of the pipe, it doe not appear to be rusted anywhere???? I am an amature PWC person with little knwledge of the craft and unfortunately required a few stiches on the right hand when the socket wrench slipped the nut while taking off the pipe assy. :( Any help is appreciated.

Either replace it or have it Tig welded. Aluminum does not "rust" it corrodes. Those plugs are from the casting process and are necessary to cast an object that has a water jacket, just like on the side of any cast engine block in a car.
Remove the pipe and take it to any qualified welding shop and they can weld up those holes.

Welding sounds like the solution for me. When I priced the pipe, it goes for over $400 + shipping. (YIKES!!) I run the ski like 5 hours a season, so buying a new pipe is not an option for this fair weather toy. Since this pipe is made out of alumimum, I need to be sure the weld is of the same material, correct? My only experience with welding is of the regular metal spot welds associated with exhaust systems and steel parts.

A TIG welder is used to weld aluminum with aluminum welding rod.

If your looking for an inexpensive fix,

I used Marine-tex on three Doo's for the same problem, I still own two of them. Use something to cean the hole like a dremel, cutter bit on a drill or a round file. Then use a paper towel or rag with rubbing alcohol and dry it. Follow the instructions it's a cheap easy fix that lasts. I did for my 94 xp, 96xp and 97gti the 96 was done 4 1/2 years ago and still holding through lots of surf riding abuse.
