Hi, I'm wondering how much grease I need to pump into the PTO zerk fitting on my 96 GSX. On the old motor it would take only a few pumps until the grease boot swelled, but on the new SBT motor it seems like I have pumped a ton of grease in and it still wants more. It's like with each pump....yes, I can see the driveshaft deflect rearward and the boot expand outward...but then they return to their original postions, as if the grease is escaping somewhere. But I can find NO evidence of leakage (externally anyway). I would appreciate if someone can shine a light on this. Also, is this the only grease fitting on this craft? Thanks

Re: Greasing PTO
Is the PTO zerk the same as the PTO flywheel?
p.s. hey administrator, did i post this reply properly? there is administrator criticism in nearly every thread on this forum, since thread contribution is highly criticized. perhaps channelling more effort away from frivolous crap (e.g. models, smily faces, arcade games, etc).and more towards forum user contribution and information, so you don't have thread 'hijackers'. just food for thought when you sit down with the website designer next time.

Re: Greasing PTO
No the "zerk" is the grease fitting, located on the PTO flywheel....John Kubiak

Re: Greasing PTO
Yes, I believe the clip is in place. And yes, the driveshaft does move rearward with each pump but returns forward between pumps. I'm wondering where all the grease is going(?)Originally posted by cdnemsguywondering if you have the 2 dollar clip inplace holding the shaft in. That clip is under the collar on the shaft. Are you pushing the driveshaft out (rearward) with each pump?

Re: Greasing PTO
The ski has been in use for awhile since the new engine and I have greased it a few times since. This last greasing I noticed it was so low on grease the boot was nearly collapsed.Originally posted by pwgsxis this the first time greasing it up or has the ski been in use with the new engine??

Re: Greasing PTO
Yes, I did notice grease on the guard--and that does explain where some of it goes when the machine is running. Just wondering where it is going when I'm pumping it in. Because although common sense tells me to stop, it is NOT threatening to leak out the boot as it did in the past when full.Originally posted by radiocontrolheadthe greese might be flying aroudn as it rotates and against the guard. do u see anythign on taht guard?
Thanks all for your suggestions, guess I will just keep pumping grease in and scratching my head on this one.

Re: Greasing PTO
Sounds to me like the rubber boot is torn or cut, thus allowing the grease to leak out.
Are the OEM stainless-steel clamps in place? If not, then it is possible that the grease is just leaking out of the boot.John Kubiak

Re: Greasing PTO
I think you need to bleed your grease gun or replace the grease cartage if necessary. The PTO boot when completely dry and clean without any grease in it at all only takes 3-4 pumps to fill it with a properly working grease gun.
Stop pumping when you see the driveshaft move rearward.
There is no place for the grease to go but out of the boot at the driveshaft splines when over filled. It cannot go into the engine.
It is best to grease things like the PTO or driveshaft bearing ( if you have a model with a driveshaft bearing), the trailer bearings and such, AFTER you remove them from the water. That way, if any water gets into anything, the grease will push it out and it won't rust during storage periods.Bill O'Neal
Re: Greasing PTO
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using tye-wraps on a pto boot. They work every bit as good as a metal clamp that requires a special tool to remove and replace. Plus, tye-wraps do not cut into the rubber and ruin the boot over time like the metal clamps do. Don't belive it? Then why did everyone have to replace their VTS modules prematuerly for 2-3 years before Sea Doo figured out that their metal clamps ruins the flexible boot on their VTS rods were causing the water to leak in and ruin the VTS module ? There fix ? Use plastic clamps on the rubber boots.
Actually some of us figured that out right away..........Bill O'Neal
