  • 1997 SEADOO GTX Motor noisy and stalls

Hi All, I have bought a 1997 GTX that has a high pitched rattling sound in motor
and will stall out after about 30 mins. of riding. If you change out plugs will run good for 30 more mins. and than stall again. I have had several seadoo's with this same 787 motor and this one has a little more ring sound to the motor .
Like it's just not real tight inside. The previous owner bought it with 42 hours in 2002 and used one summer up to 68 hours when problems stated. He took ski to Dealer and they Installed new Stator, oil pump and lines, rebuilt carbs, removed and cleaned fuel system and cleaned out his pockets too !!
Then they told he that something sound lose in motor and would replace motor for $1500.00, so if you add the $550.00 he had already paid them, He got tired and sold ski to me. Any suggestion where I should start. Have not checked compression. Thought I would start there and move on to Rotary valve and RAVE exhaust valves. This forum helped me greatly in past, just thought I would look for some Ideas ??

    Thanks MRG120

a noisy engine that fouls plugs prob has piston damage , compression test should tell you some of what you will need to know . you might want to try cutting the spark plug wires back to show some fresh wire then put the boots back on . post the compression results when you do them .

      Hi,

I had the same problem awhile back. So I finally broke the motor apart and came to find out that the piston was all busted up and sitting really loose in the cylinder. What happened was that the wrist pin bearing cam apart and then the rest of the damage came with it. I did alot of looking and measuring of different areas and I think a new top end will fix it. Ordering my stuff today so we'll see in a few weeks. :emoticont

Rave valves and rotary valves do not make the kind of noises you describe. Buy you can use a flashligh the look at one side of the pistons by removing the rave valves.
Do the compression test, remove the head and look at the piston tops and clyinder walls.

OK, I have do a compression check. Mag cylinder 135psi, PTO 150psi. I dug threw all the papers the previos owner gave me with ski and found where the local dealer had found the mag cyliders carb. filter and screen was clogged up .So I'm thanking that the cause of problem has bee repaired. I have pulled the top-end of motor and found no shaving broken parts, Just a really burn and wore piston and ring. ( comparing it to PTO piston and ring ). Before taking motor apart I started on a flush kit and used a stethascope, bottum end sound fine . All noise seemed to be coming from MAG cylinder. I thank I will be safe just building the top-end. Just let me know what your thoughts are.
          Thanks MRG120...........
