  • 97 xp tries to turn over but wont

To start I will tell you the problem. My 97 XP attemps to turn over but before it does the starter stops kicking and it repeats this action over and over. If i pull both plugs it turns over fine. Here is a list of things that i have done and checked. Replaced battery, used other batteries, checked rotery valve timing, tried different starter that works great in other jet ski, checked all pins and wires for coreotion and continuity, i have replaced battery cables with brand new ones, replaced sellonoid, taken the whole engine out had just the engine sitting on the work bench and just had starter hooked up to the battery. This motor will not turn over.

Do you know why it wont turn over or can you give me advise on what to do next?? Am I forgetting to do something???

with spark plugs out, turn engine by hand. It should not bind.

starter kicking means the starter hits the fly wheel and then kicks back and does it over and over. its like the engine is locked up, but it isnt

Your description is a marginal battery and/or bad battery cable connections and/or a bad starter clutch (bendix)

My 97XP did that, it was a bad start switch on the handle bars. I tried changing most everything, then I put in a new switch. Worked perfect.

I take it you've spun the engine with the starter while installed in the ski with the plugs out? Just to make sure the crankcase isn't full of water and/or fuel?

If you tried it on the work bench its not the starter switch. :emoticont
