I just purchased a 99 GSX without being familiar with the model or the 951. i have always had Yamaha GPIIIs that never seem to have any issues other than being slow but other than that have always been bulletproof. When i bought it, i was told the VTS didn't work and that it was blowing fuses. i got a good deal on it, and it only had 36 hours. i put it in the water yesterday, and it is much faster and more powerful than my GP's, it was a blast. i had to see what was wrong with the VTS, so i put a 5 amp fuse in, POP. i then put a 20 amp fuse in, and now NOTHING. no display, no chirp when the laynard is attached, just black and won't start. After i made this idiotic mistake, i found the SBT forum with all of the info about the 951 and different problems. I was thinking of this engine in the same terms as the Yamaha 650, and 36 hours wasn't anything! I ride mine 36 hours a year. Anyway, i have a few questions that i hope someone can help me with:
1. What did i do by putting the 20 amp fuse in, and how do i fix?
2. What can i do about the VTS? Should i try and fix, or set at middle trim and ride?
3. Once i get running, what kind of rpm marks should i be looking for? idle, and top?
4. If i get it running, should i sell it immediately and buy the new Honda R12 like i had planned on before coming across this deal?
Thank you for your help,
