Which Rebuild Kit?

Bryan,

Finally time to rebuild these suckers... Good cleaning just won't do it anymore...

Which rebuild kit do I need for my 94XP (657x)? The spec sheets shows two models...
5854 Uses the Mikuni BN-38I
5855 Uses the Mikuni BN-38
(Even though I know both of mine are SBN, even though it says BN)..

But do I need the "I" kit or not?! My front motor plate is missing, so I have NO idea what model it is.. Any other ways to tell? $15.00 difference between the two kits... want to make sure before I order tomorrow...

The "I" kits are for I body carbs that came out on later models. You need 5855 for your 94 xp model.

But both the 5854 and 5855 ARE 94xp's.. One specs out needing "I" and one not. What is the definition of an "I" body carb compared to a regular SBN?

In 1994, SD made two versions of XP's, one had the 657X motor and the other had the same 657 motor that was used in the 1993XP.

The XP's sold in America were the standard XP monicker, whereas the XPI, sold in other countries were called XPI, which stands for international model XP's.

The 1993 SD XP and the 1994 XPI used a 657 engine with SBN38 carbs.
The 1994 XP uses a 657X motor and 38-40 SBN "I" series carbs.

As far as I know, the 38-46mm Mikuni SBN carb kits will work in either of those two carbs. You do not need "I" series carb kits.

Phil, Before you editied your post, You were right but wrong too.

The 99 XPL uses Mikuni SBN 46 "I" series carbs.

The 1994 XP was the very first Sea Doo that used the Mikuni SBN 38-40 "I" series carbs.

The 1994 OEM service manual does not mention the "I" series carbs, but if you look at the carbs, you can see that they are the taperbore type Mikuni's with the allen bolts running through the carb body to attach them to the manifold. Very different than the 38 SBN that came on all previous XP's that used studs in the manifold and nuts to hold the base of the carbs on the manifold, as well as the straight bores in the carb throats.

Again, Sea Doo printed the service manual long before the 1994 XP went into production, and like many other things on Sea Doo's, they do not always use the same parts and specs when they actually make the skis as opposed to printing the manuals.

Thanks for clearing that up Bill, I was not awear that they used "I" body carbs that early. I did have them on my 95 xp but did not think they put them on the 94's.
