  • 1992 Seadoo SP blowing the 5 amp fuse

I just replaced teh starter and solenoid on my 1992 Seadoo sp. The only thing different was the color of the solenoid, Old one was black the new one tan. When I try to start with the button the 5 amp fuse blows. I can jump the solenoid and the starter works. I have checked all my wires and grounds but still no cigar.

The 5 amp fuse is fed from the 15 amp fuse after getting power from the rectifier via a red wire coming out of the rectifier. After the 5 amp fuse is the MPEM and Rev limiter. One of those two items is causing the 5 amp fuse to blow. I think you will need to replace the MPEM, unless you find a short somewhere in the wiring.

The unit was running great last year. The solenoid was causing the starter to engage while the engine was running thus tearing the teeth from the starter. I replace both the starter and solenoid but after the installation the 5 amp fuse blows. I replace the mpem a couple years ago with the one with not external relays and it's worked great. I was wondering if I used the wrong solenoid. It looks the same and has the same plug from the starter switch but I think it came from a tigershark. The original was black this one is tan. I am trying to clean the corrision from both to verify the numbers. Should I be concerned with the metal shavings from the starter creating a short? The only changes since it was running was the solenoid and starter. The starter works with direct power the solenoid??? Could the solenoid cause the fuse to blow?

No, you could use a solenoid from an old Ford and it would not matter. Shorts blow fuses, not solenoids.

Any thoughts on the stator and starter teeth? I read in one of the other threads that a short in the stator might create this issue. Is there a easy way to test this theory?

I have islolated everything I can think of and still not a clue. I just ran out of 5 amp fuses so I need to get more.

Is there a way to determine if the solenoil is bad? I isolated the switch wires to it and jumped them and nothing happened. Should I be able to energize the solenoid by connecting the two input wires are is there a need to add 12volts? I used to jump my old mustang by just connecting the switch post but I think there was in internal power source.

              Good news

Bad solenoid. Yes it will blow the 5 amp fues on a 92 sp.
Lesson learned. Don't buy electrical parts off ebay. A $9 solenoid has cost me a lot of time!

Do you sell solenoids or should I go to my local Seadoo dealer? You have helped the most so I owe it to you
