I installed an 787 SBT motor and attempted to crank it for the first time today. After a few revolutions it fired up and I let it idle for a minute or so. When I try to give it a little gas, it cuts off and then backfires. I saw the thread on magneto allignment and I am somewhat sure I have it right. Is this a sure sign of a magneto allignment problem or there other possibilities. Getting to the flywheel without removing the engine doesn't look promising. One other bit of information. It was shipped with a new rotary valve and cover already installed. I did not check it as I assumed it was already timed correctly. Also, the idle was lower than it should be. Do I need to bump up the idle speed? Would that have this effect?

Re: 787 install (97 GSX)
Did you have it on the hose for those couple minutes? No your magneto would not do that, it's fine. It would start hard if the valve was mistimed. Idle should be 3000 out of the water.
Most likely you need to rebuild the carbs. Do you know where you adjustment needles are set to? Is everything assembled and stock on the ski?SBT Tech Support is here to help with your problems.

Re: 787 install (97 GSX)
Yes, it was on the hose. Everything is stock. I had the flame arrestor installed, but not the entire air cover. The carbs were rebuilt last year and I did not adjust the needles. All I wanted to do was make sure it would fire before taking it to the lake. Thanks for the response. I was afraid I had installed the magneto cup incorrectly. Thanks.

My suggestion would be that something is either not built correctly in the carbs, they are not adjusted corrrectly, or simply need to be rebuilt again.SBT Tech Support is here to help with your problems.

Re: 787 install (97 GSX)
Thanks, you were right on. The flywheel carb was leaking air. I installed the SBT carb rebuild kits and everything looks good. It cranks easily and is ready for the lake.:beer Thanks again and again! I do have one more question. What are the stock settings for this motor? I saw the tech support thread but I am not sure if this is a 97 1/2 or a 98. I thought it was a 97 GSX but now I'm not sure.Last edited by jbssc; 06-22-2006, 10:26 PM.
