  • Possible causes for stripped rotary gear

What would be possible causes for a rotary gear (the brass one) to loose all it's teeth within the first few minutes of running a new SBT engine. Assume no foreign objects and oil bath correctly set up after block-off plate installed. I'm just trying to determine if I can replace just the shaft but am concerned because I don't know what caused it to strip in the 1st place.

Note:This is NOT a warranty claim, I've got two of these skis, put SBT motors in both of them about two years ago, one was fine, then I did this one, it ran like crap as soon as I cranked it, thought it was carb, rebuilt it, still wouldn't run right, thought I may not have timed it right, same week, some fisherman pulled plug on the good ski (they're on lifts on the lake), it sunk when let off the lift and tied to pier, I got disgusted, pickled them and covered them up. Decided to get them running last week and sell them, got the one in question to crank almost immediately (still ran like crap), sounded like it was running on one cylinder, took intake off to re-check timing of rotary valve, noticed shaft was not turning w/ engine, and turns out it was running off of one cylinder. Pulled shaft yesterday, brass gear stripped, no damage apparent to anything else, good compression, rotary valve good. Go figure.

Damage to the valve or cover, too much cover clearance, lack of oil, debris - are the most common causes.

Had Oil, No debris, valve is still good, what does too much clearance on cover mean? How would I check this? Thanks.

Verify the cover surface is perfect, no knicks, scrage gouges, etc. Separate the cover from the intake manifold. Without the o-ring in place, bolt the cover up over the valve. Measure with a feeler gauge between the valve and cover. It needs to be between 0.010" - 0.014"
